With over 25 years of experience in reef keeping, 10 years in the public aquarium industry, 3 years at a very predominant saltwater specialty store, here is my story.
When I graduated high school, all I wanted to do was work at Sea World, so I started college studying in aquatic biology. I started my first reef tank somewhere around 1997. This lead to my first business adventure as Ocean's Paradise in 2006. Shortly there after I volunteered and helped to build the Idaho Aquarium. For 6 months I volunteered and helped everything from animal care, to exhibit construction. I was offered a caretaker position and my knowledge again broadened and I was then keeping not just reef animals, but began propagating jelly fish, seahorses, cuttlefish, and learned not only tropical Saltwater Aquariums, but also temperate Saltwater, cold water, and fresh water ecosystems.
I progressed and moved to Portland to help build the Portland Aquarium. To my surprise, I quickly moved into the director position. Writing care manuals, procuring animals, getting permits, and training employees. During my time there I attended an aquatic veterinary course. This course taught everything. We learned how to do skin scrapes, gill clips, fin clips, disease recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. Again, making the knowledge I had stronger.
As the company grew I continued to increase my knowledge and hone my abilities. I flew to new sites helped with design, training, stabilization of systems, writing of procedures and protocols, and in total helped to build, design, and train employees at a total of 12 public aquariums in 10 states from California to Connecticut. I worked with the company of and on for a total of 10 years.
Shortly after my first son was born, I needed to take a step back as I was gone 25 out of 30 days on the road. I decided to take a break from the public aquarium scene. I started working at a great local store in Portland, called Cuttlefish and Corals. Jeff was a great boss, and allowed me to do what I did best and that was to make animals thrive and help people understand the biological processes in their tank. I worked with Jeff off and on helping to grow his store and support. I continued to consult on the side for aquariums helping with design, animal sickness, disease control, life support, and problem solving.
A few years later, I had my second son, this is when we chose to move back to Idaho, just before 2020. I stayed at home with my kids for a year and half and could tell I was missing something. What I was missing, was the teaching, so I decided to start Quality Saltwater Fish and Corals to help the local community. I want to raise the bar of what we see as normal in pet stores for fish/Corals. Bringing the knowledge I have learned in disease recognition and control n I have implemented many of our protocols in quarantine and treatment to be able to bring my customers the healthiest animals. And help them to have the healthiest reef tank.
All of our corals go through extensive dips, medication, and are constantly being manicured and groomed daily to ensure we always offer the best specimens in the hobby. Our fish are selected from only the best collectors, and upon entry into our facility, the fish are placed into holding systems with copper, they are fed high quality food and medications to ensure our customers get the healthiest specimens. We always recommend quarantine and dipping prior to adding to your display to ensure your investment is protected. Ask our specialists about our procedures and recommendations. We gladly share what has worked for us!
While we can not guarantee all of our specimens will thrive in your aquarium, what we can guarantee is if you do lose something in a short time,, come see us and we will do our best to make it right. We understand this hobby is expensive and things happen. Allow us to help you through your trials and errors, you are not alone. If your tank has a problem, we want to help! If your tank is happy, so are we.
